Liaison psychiatry counselling
Counselling is a brief intervention which may be offered to people experiencing a recent onset of psychological difficulties.
Counselling is a talking therapy which allows people to discuss their problems, thoughts and feelings in a safe and dependable environment.
What is counselling used for and who would it benefit?
Counselling can be used to help with many different emotional and mental health conditions including:
- low mood
- mild to moderate depression
- mild to moderate anxiety
- poor coping strategies or life skills
- low self-esteem
- overwhelming recent life events
- family and relationship difficulties
- adjustment reaction and / or complex loss
- recent disruptive life event(s).
How counselling can help
Counselling can help you deal with, and overcome, issues that are causing you emotional pain or that are making you feel uncomfortable. It provides a safe and regular space for you to talk and explore difficult thoughts and feelings.
The counsellor is there to support you. Counsellors are not judgemental or biased and they will respect your views. They will help you to find your own insight and understanding into your problems and difficulties. They will not usually offer advice.
Counselling can often involve talking about difficult or painful thoughts and feelings. As you begin to face these you may feel worse but, with help and support from your therapist, you should gradually start to feel better.
Sessions may occur weekly or fortnightly within the hospital environment or at an outpatient appointment.
