Dr Mani Santhana Krishnan has won the Innovation Champion Award at the Bright Ideas in Health Awards 2021. The consultant in old age psychiatry/liaison psychiatry and senior clinical director for mental health services for older people was named the winner in the virtual ceremony on Thursday 25 November.
He was nominated by his colleagues at Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust for going above and beyond his day-to-day role to improve patient care and experience, and always ensuring that patient care is the best it can be.
He also demonstrated that compared to 12-lead ECGs, the time saved using the 6-lead device would give staff more time for patient care. It also enabled community teams to perform ECGs while adhering to social distancing rules.
He subsequently led a project team that introduced the 6-lead ECG device into the trust’s community and inpatient teams during the pandemic.
Recognising the economic benefits to the NHS and patient care, Dr Krishnan presented the innovation at national and international conferences and held countless training and Q&A sessions. This has led to a neighbouring NHS Trust procuring their own devices and the pathway has now been adopted by NHSX as a national programme, with NHS Trusts across the country able to bid for the device.
Congratulations Dr. Krishnan!
