Cognitive stimulation therapy is a group treatment for people living with mild to moderate dementia. (CST)
Ward/service name | MHSOP, Trust wide |
Lead contact name | Emma Thompson |
What does the CST group involve?
CST is a fun programme of activity sessions, designed to improve wellbeing and confidence. CST is a therapy that is well researched and has been shown to improve wellbeing and memory for those living with dementia. CST takes place over 14 sessions and each session follows a theme. Some examples of these include:
- physical games
- famous faces
- word games
- number games
- creative activities.
The atmosphere is relaxed, and the idea is to have fun, as well as benefit from the activities. Sessions aim to be stimulating and engaging. They also provide a good learning environment and the social benefits of a group. Light refreshments will be available.
Who runs the group?
Two members of staff will normally lead the group. You will have a group leader. Sometimes, if they are not available, another member of staff may lead your group. It is a closed group, so the same people will attend every session. There will usually be around 6/8 people in each group.
What happens after the CST group ends?
It is important that you continue with the activities that you enjoy and find helpful. You may also consider joining a community activity group.
